Description
Description
Refrigerant, R134A

- 12 kg
(The cylinder is included in the price)
Use and Application
R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) is a single-component HFC refrigerant and was one of the most widely used refrigerants for many years.
Areas of application:
-
Automotive air conditioning systems: Long-time standard in vehicle air conditioning systems (now increasingly replaced by R1234yf).
-
Household refrigeration: Refrigerators and freezers (as a replacement for R12).
-
Commercial refrigeration: Medium temperature applications (supermarket display cases, cold rooms).
-
Chillers and industrial refrigeration systems.
-
Heat pumps and certain air conditioning units.
Properties:
-
No ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0).
-
GWP ~1430 (medium level).
-
Single-component → easy recovery and refilling.
-
Balanced energy efficiency, widely used for a long time.
Note: Due to its relatively high GWP, R134a is gradually being phased out in the EU and many other regions and increasingly replaced by lower GWP alternatives such as R1234yf or R513A.
Summary:
R134a is primarily used in automotive air conditioning systems, household refrigerators, and commercial refrigeration systems, but its importance is declining due to environmental regulations.
Important note on authorization to handle refrigerants:
- Original sealed refrigerant cylinders.
- Cylinder design and color may naturally vary, as these are reusable cylinders in an exchange system.
- The cylinder is included in the price
Return of the deposit cylinder:
Containers purchased from us after February 28, 2024, may be returned for refilling in accordance with Art. 11 Para. 4 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, using the provided return label. If a return label is not (or no longer) available, you can request a new return label via the contact form.
Law on the handling of refrigerants:
Sale exclusively to holders of a certificate in accordance with Art. 10 Para. 1 Subpara. 1 lit. a of Regulation (EU) 573/2024 or representatives of companies that employ such holders or holders of a training certificate in accordance with Art. 10 Para. 1 Subpara. 2 of the Regulation. The purchase of the goods must serve the installation, maintenance or servicing or repair of equipment in accordance with Art. 5 Para. 2 and 3 lit. a and b and Art. 10 Para. 1 Subpara. 2, which contain the goods or require them for their functioning.

R134A (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) has been the standard refrigerant for automotive air conditioning systems and numerous refrigeration systems for years. As a proven alternative to ozone-depleting R12, it offers excellent thermodynamic properties and high operational safety.
Where is R134A used?
R134A is widely used in refrigeration and air conditioning technology. In vehicle air conditioning systems, it ensures reliable temperature control, especially in vehicles produced before 2017. Commercial refrigeration systems such as supermarket refrigerated display cases or transport refrigeration also rely on the proven properties of R134A. It is also still used in stationary air conditioning systems and some heat pumps.
The refrigerant is characterized by its non-flammability and lack of explosive properties. It is colorless, almost odorless, and can be easily liquefied by pressure. However, with a GWP value of 1,430, it has a high global warming potential, which is why its use is increasingly regulated.
Legal Situation and Availability
Since 2017, new vehicles in the EU are no longer allowed to be equipped with R134A. However, its use remains permitted for servicing and maintenance of existing systems. The EU F-Gas Regulation is leading to a gradual reduction in available quantities, which has caused prices to rise significantly in recent years.
Despite these developments, R134A is still available for service purposes. However, from 2032, the use of virgin R134A for maintenance will be restricted – only recycled or reclaimed refrigerants will then be permitted.
Professional Filling and Service
The filling of an air conditioning system with R134A should always be carried out by trained specialists. The process includes pressure testing the system, properly extracting the old refrigerant, evacuating to remove moisture, and finally filling with the correct amount.
The use of the correct compressor oil is also important. While R134A is predominantly used with PAG oils, these are hygroscopic and absorb moisture from the environment. The correct viscosity class must be observed.

Frequently Asked Questions about "R134A" Refrigerant
Can I mix R134A with other refrigerants?
No, R134A must never be mixed with other refrigerants like R1234yf. This can lead to severe system damage and safety risks. The connection couplers are designed differently for good reason.
What alternatives are there to R134A?
For new systems, R407C, R410A, or R32 are mainly used, depending on the application. In vehicle technology, R1234yf has largely replaced R134A. However, a direct conversion of existing R134A systems is usually not possible or advisable.
How do I know if my vehicle uses R134A?
Look under the hood – you will find an identification plate there with the refrigerant used. Vehicles manufactured before 2017 generally use R134A; newer vehicles mostly use R1234yf.
Why are R134A prices so high?
The EU regulation artificially limits import quantities, which has led to shortages and corresponding price increases. In some cases, prices have risen by up to 400 percent.
