R404A is a proven refrigerant blend specially developed for freezer and refrigeration applications. This zeotropic mixture consists of pentafluoroethane (R125, 44%), 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (R143a, 52%), and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a, 4%). With a boiling point of -46.6°C, it is excellent for low to medium temperature ranges.

Legal Situation and Current Regulations

Since January 1, 2020, no new refrigeration systems may be installed using R404A. This applies to stationary refrigeration systems as well as commercial refrigerators and freezers with hermetically sealed systems. For existing systems, however, a permit for use still applies under certain conditions.

For systems with less than 40 tons of CO2 equivalent (approx. 10.2 kg R404A), fresh stock may still be used until the end of 2024. Larger systems may only be refilled with recycled or reclaimed R404A. From 2030, only recycled material will be permitted for smaller systems as well.

These regulations are leading to increasing scarcity and corresponding price increases for R404A. Many operators are therefore considering switching to alternative refrigerants with lower global warming potential.

Maintenance of R404A systems requires trained specialist personnel with appropriate certification. The handling of the refrigerant is subject to strict record-keeping obligations and regular leak tests. When performing service work, particular attention must be paid to using the correct compressor oil.

R404A systems typically use POE (Polyolester) oil, which has good compatibility with the refrigerant blend. During repairs, the filter drier should also be replaced to ensure the longevity of the system.
