R134A as a Successor to R12

R134A was developed to replace the ozone-depleting R12 (CFC) without its ozone depletion potential. As a pure substance (not a blend), R134A has no temperature glide, which simplifies filling and troubleshooting. Its low pressure level and comparatively high boiling point make it the preferred choice for the medium- and high-temperature range – it is not designed for deep-freeze applications.

When retrofitting or servicing, make sure to use the correct lubricant: stationary refrigeration and air conditioning systems typically use polyol ester (POE), while vehicle air conditioning systems usually run on PAG oil. Mixing the two oil systems should be avoided.

Safety, Storage and Disposal

R134A belongs to safety class A1 and is considered non-flammable. Nevertheless, basic safety measures must be observed when handling it. Avoid direct skin contact with liquid refrigerant and work in well-ventilated areas, as released gas can displace oxygen. The safety data sheet contains all relevant information on hazards, protective measures and first-aid measures – read it carefully before use.

Can I mix R134A with other refrigerants?

No, R134A must never be mixed with other refrigerants such as R1234yf. This can cause serious system damage and safety risks. The connection couplings are designed differently for good reason.

What alternatives to R134A are there?

For new systems, R407C, R410A or R32 are mainly used, depending on the application. In vehicle technology, R1234yf has largely replaced R134A. However, a direct retrofit of existing R134A systems is usually not possible or advisable.

How do I know if my vehicle uses R134A?

Look under the bonnet – there you will find a label indicating the refrigerant used. Vehicles built before 2017 generally use R134A, while newer vehicles mostly use R1234yf.
