What is R407C? Properties and Use
R407C is a ternary HFC refrigerant mixture of R32, R125, and R134a. It was developed to replace R22 in existing and new systems without the ozone-depleting potential of its predecessor. The GWP value is ~1774 – significantly lower than older HCFC refrigerants, but higher than newer alternatives such as R32 or R449A. Safety class A1 designates it as non-flammable and non-toxic.
The refrigerant is mainly used in air conditioning systems and heat pumps that previously operated with R22. Due to its temperature glide (~7 K), particular care is required in system design. The most important technical properties of R407C:
-
No ozone depletion potential: ODP = 0, completely ozone-friendly
-
Safety class A1: Non-flammable, low toxicity
-
R22-like performance: Allows for retrofit without complete system replacement
-
Temperature glide ~7 K: Requires careful system adjustment when converting
-
Broad applicability: Suitable for split, VRF, and heat pump systems
Handling requires care and valid certification according to Art. 10 (1) of Regulation (EU) 573/2024. Installation and filling may only be carried out by trained specialists.
R407C as a retrofit solution for R22 systems
R407C was specifically developed for retrofitting existing R22 systems. Its performance data is similar to R22, allowing for a direct replacement in many systems. However, an oil change to POE oil is required for retrofitting, as R407C is not compatible with the mineral oil commonly used in R22 systems. The system must be professionally inspected before any retrofit.
The temperature glide of ~7 K is a significant difference compared to pure refrigerants like R32. It occurs because the components of the mixture evaporate and condense at different temperatures. This affects the design of heat exchangers and expansion valves. Older systems designed for R22 can usually be converted to R407C – however, a professional inspection and, if necessary, replacement of components are essential. Use only refrigerants that comply with EN 378 and ISO 817 standards.
Safety, Storage, and Disposal
R407C belongs to safety class A1 and is considered non-flammable. Nevertheless, basic safety measures must be observed during handling. Avoid direct skin contact with liquid refrigerant and work in well-ventilated areas, as released gas can displace oxygen. The safety data sheet contains all relevant information on hazards, protective measures, and first aid – read it carefully before use.
The most important safety instructions for working with R407C refrigerant:
-
Ensure ventilation: Work in well-ventilated areas or outdoors
-
Wear protective equipment: Use safety glasses and gloves when handling
-
Perform leak check: Check connections before and after filling
-
Observe pressure limits: Never exceed permissible operating pressures
-
Have an emergency plan ready: Know first aid measures in case of skin contact or inhalation
Store containers upright in cool, dry rooms, protected from direct sunlight and heat sources above 50 °C. Keep refrigerant cylinders away from flammable materials and secure them against tipping. Disposal is subject to legal regulations for fluorinated greenhouse gases – refrigerant must not be released into the atmosphere. Empty or partially empty containers must be disposed of via certified disposal companies or return systems.

R407C Refrigerant FAQ
In practice, R407C often raises questions about compatibility, retrofitting, and correct handling. Here are the answers to the most important ones.
What is R407C and what is it used for?
R407C is a ternary HFC mixture of R32, R125, and R134a, developed as a replacement for R22. It is mainly used in air conditioning systems, heat pumps, and commercial refrigeration applications in the medium temperature range.
Can I use R407C directly as a replacement for R22?
A retrofit is possible in many cases but requires an oil change to POE oil, as R407C is not compatible with mineral oil. Additionally, the system must be professionally checked to ensure that compressors, expansion valves, and seals are suitable for operation with R407C.
What does temperature glide mean for R407C?
R407C is a refrigerant blend whose components evaporate and condense at different temperatures. This so-called temperature glide of ~7 K affects system design and must be considered for heat exchangers and expansion valves.
What certification do I need to purchase R407C?
The purchase is exclusively reserved for holders of a valid certificate in accordance with Art. 10 Para. 1 of Regulation (EU) 573/2024 or representatives of certified companies. The refrigerant may only be acquired for the installation, maintenance, or servicing of corresponding facilities.
How do I store R407C refrigerant correctly?
Store the cylinder upright in a cool, dry room, protected from sunlight and temperatures above 50 °C. Keep the refrigerant away from flammable materials and secure the cylinder against tipping over.
Can I return the deposit cylinder?
Yes. Cylinders purchased from Voll Gas after February 28, 2024, can be returned in accordance with Art. 11 Para. 4 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 with the provided return slip. A new return slip can be obtained via the contact form.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are shipped insured within Germany. Delivery time is usually 1-3 business days. Shipping is free for orders over €100.
