R134A as a Successor to R12
R134A was developed to replace the ozone-depleting R12 (CFC) without its ozone depletion potential. As a pure substance (not a blend), R134A has no temperature glide, which simplifies filling and troubleshooting. Its low pressure level and comparatively high boiling point make it the preferred choice for the medium- and high-temperature range – it is not designed for deep-freeze applications.
When retrofitting or servicing, make sure to use the correct lubricant: stationary refrigeration and air conditioning systems typically use polyol ester (POE), while vehicle air conditioning systems usually run on PAG oil. Mixing the two oil systems should be avoided.
